The former home of fishermen and sailors, Porto Azzurro, with its colours and its bay, is an essential visit. You can admire the fort of San Giacomo overlooking the village. The fort, in a unique star shape, was “built” by Philip II of Spain in 1603.
Don’t miss out on seeing the old town, with its narrow streets and stone steps. One essential visit is to Piazza Matteotti, once the site of the landings of Spanish galleons, and the Chapel of Sacro Cuore di Maria, dating back to 1727, a place of worship for soldiers, sailors and fishermen.
